Pro-Cathedral & Rotunda Chapel

On Saturday 21 Oct the Society visited a number of Dublin churches led by Mr Kevin Mulligan and Dr Mike O'Neill. The tour began in the Pro-Cathedral. Kevin described the development of the building and spoke on the contribution of various archbishops to the project. The visit to the Rotunda Chapel, a first for many of the member, coincided with visiting hour at the hospital so that one got the full sense of the chapel as a quite space in a bustling building. The magnificent ceilings, font and woodwork were described by Kevin in great detail. As we left a member of staff very kindly allowed us to leave by the main staircase, with its wonderful plasterwork. The final stop was St Mary's church in Mary's St - new a restaurant and bar - bring the outing to a convivial conclusion.

The antiquaries gather outside the Pro-Cathedral on a rather grey and wintry day.

Dr Michael O'Neill explains the history and architecture of the building.
