Archaeological Discovery in the county of Mayo 2010
This fund was established under the terms of the will of Lady Noel Sidney Bevir in 1992 'to further the Society's work of archaeological discovery in the county of Mayo'. Applications are now invited from members of the Society in good standing for grants towards suitable projects to be carried out in 2010 in the categories of 1) Fieldwork or 2) Publication. Grant applications to a maximum of €2000 will be considered.

1) Fieldwork. Survey, recording and/or analysis of archaeological monuments or landscapes will be considered. Work in this category could include fieldwalking and prospecting for sites, professional instrument survey, publication drawings, geophysical survey, aerial photography and radiocarbon dating. Archaeological excavation will not be considered except in the very limited case of cleaning back and recording exposed and eroding coastal middens. A report on the grant-aided work together with full financial accounts must be presented by the end of November 2010.
2) Publication. The publication of the results of archaeological fieldwork in Co. Mayo in book form can be considered for grant aid. A full copy of the text and illustrations must be submitted with the application together with an estimate for the cost of printing and binding. If grant-aided the Society's name and logo must appear on the book along with a suitable acknowledgement mentioning the fund. The grant will only be paid on receipt of two copies of the book, one for the Society's library and one for review in the Journal.Fifteenth-century mural paintings in the Abbey on Clare Island, Co. Applications, clearly written or typed on official forms, must be received at the Society's house by 4pm on Thursday January 14th 2010. They should be marked Bevir Trust Archaeological Fund and addressed to the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, 63 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Applicants will be informed of a grant decision at the end of February 2010
Projects grant-aided in recent years include archaeological survey work on the Inishkea islands, Co. Mayo; aerial photography of church sites in Co. Mayo; and, in the publication category, Vol. 4 of the New Survey of Clare Island on the Abbey.
Conditions
1) The Society accepts no liability for any loss, damage or injury incurred by the applicant, landowners or the public as a result of work undertaken with the aid of this grant.
2) The applicant must arrange any necessary insurance.
3) The applicant must get all necessary permissions to enter land etc and any licences that are necessary such as an excavation licence or a licence to alter or export an archaeological object.
4) Discovery of all new sites, found in the course of work grant-aided under this scheme, must be reported to the Society and to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) as soon as possible but at least by the end of November of the year the grant was given. 5) Discovery of archaeological objects must be reported to the National Museum in accordance with the National Monuments Acts.
Fieldwork expenses
Fieldwork expenses shall be based on the following maximum rates:
Petrol expenses: 25 cent per mile for necessary travel.
Overnight expenses: €50 for each twenty-four hours away from home.
Claims for train, bus or boat fares to be supported by ticket or receipt.
